Submission Guidelines
AVATAR Literary Magazine is delighted to invite you to contribute your talents to the pages of our magazine. We are looking for poetry, short prose, images, and audio to be considered for publication in our Spring 2025 issue. Please email submissions to avatar@smcm.edu. In order for your submission to be considered, ensure that it adheres to the following guidelines:

Poetry
No more than 5 poems per poet will be accepted. Please submit them in PDF format. Each work should not exceed 2 pages in length, poem series should not exceed 3 pages. 12 pt Times New Roman font. If you are submitting multiple poems, please submit them in separate files. Poems in a series should be included in the same PDF document. The title of the poem/ series should be the name of the file. Please do not include your name in the text of the file. If you have a pen name you would like to appear in the publication instead of your name, include that in your email. The AVATAR Exec Board reserves the right to fix minor typos in all submitted written work, however submissions are expected to be proofread thoroughly and finalized.

Images
No more than 5 images per artist will be accepted. Please submit images in PNG or TIFF format, 300 DPI is preferred. The name of the file should be the title of the work. We accept all mediums. If you have a pseudonym that you would like to appear in the publication, please include it in your email. Artist statements (75 words maximum) and height and width (WxH) can be included in the body of submission emails, but are not required. Please submit each work as an individual file (which can all be attached to the same email). If you are interested in the cover contest please see guidelines here.

Trigger Warning Policy
ALL poets, authors and artists should review their work for excessive gore, mentions of self-harm, eating disorders, sexual assault, transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexual content, domestic abuse & violence and note any potential trigger warnings within your submission email. Please be liberal with these labels, it is better to over-label than under-label.

Prose
No more than 1500 words of prose per writer will be accepted. Please submit each prose works as an individual PDF file. The title of the work should be the name of the file. Please do not include your name in the text of the file. If you have a pen name that you would like to appear in the magazine instead of your name, please include that in your email.The AVATAR Exec Board reserves the right to fix minor typos in all submitted work, however submissions are expected to be proofread thoroughly and finalized.

Original Work Policy
ALL submitted work must be original to the author/ artist that submits the work. AI generated work, traced art, or otherwise unoriginal work will be disqualified. Please do not submit work that is not original.
